Job Brief

Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Junior Environmental Technician to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, ecological and natural resources, environmental compliance, and environmental remediation and contamination services.  This position is a hybrid field/office position and will be based out of our Melbourne or Orlando office locations.

As a small business, we are involved in a diverse, fast-paced environment serving private, municipal, and federal clients.  This position provides a unique opportunity for a motivated individual to learn from a highly qualified team of scientists and engineers, while making a clear impact in our environment.  This position is ideal for someone who enjoys field work and wants to be exposed to a diversity of project types, ranging from freshwater to coastal applications. This part-time or internship position can become a full-time position with benefits with proven performance and professional growth.

Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of completed college education in a relevant field, able and willing to do fieldwork in a variety of upland, wetland, and in-water conditions. The ideal candidate is a highly energetic and motivated team player, problem solver, willing to follow detailed protocols and learn quickly and efficiently.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Two years of college education completed (AA or AS) OR be a rising junior in a B.A. or a B.S degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, Oceanography, or related technical field.
  • Ability to perform field work and work in the field in various types of weather, lift 40 pounds (including loaded coolers, soil corers, and other equipment) and walk or hike through rough and uneven terrain, woodlands, thick vegetation, water, and on slopes while carrying supplies. 
  • Ability to work in water environments (boat, lakes, canals, estuaries, etc.)
  • Ability and willingness to learn and follow precise protocols for field data collection
  • Commitment to the task at hand and reliability to meet schedule
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to prepare reports and setup spreadsheets
  • Attention to detail
  • Works well in a team environment
  • A valid Florida Driver’s license is required, and a clean driving record must be maintained
  • Must be able to pass drug testing and a background check
  • Willing to work occasional weekend and/or evening hours in addition to regular work hours. Schedule availability can be discussed for internship positions.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally eligible to work in the United States under the Immigration Reform and Control Act

Desired Qualifications

  • Wetland delineation or assessment experience
  • Experience with groundwater sampling
  • Experience with soil and/or sediment sampling
  • Experience with water quality sampling techniques, data entry, chain of custody, and standard operating procedures is highly desirable.
  • Florida Boater Safety Certified and/or experience with handling small watercraft
  • Scuba certified and comfortable with snorkeling
  • Experience with advanced water quality instrumentation, troubleshooting with technical equipment is also a plus.
  • Experience in ESRI ArcGIS or AutoCAD software applications, including mapping, editing of spatial data, or drafting is preferred. Willingness to learn additional GIS/AutoCAD skills and motivated to use problem-solving skills for diverse environmental projects.
  • Benthic or coral assessment experience
  • Fluency in a foreign language

Position Summary

This position will support primarily the water resources service line, with the ability to serve the natural resources and environmental compliance programs as well. This technician position will work with the Applied Ecology team, under the guidance of a lead Field Scientist, with emphasis on the technical operations, including deploying, operating, and maintaining surface water, stormwater, seepage, and groundwater monitoring sites and sampling equipment, according to Florida Department of Environmental Protection SOPs. In addition, driving to and from field sampling locations and laboratories to deliver samples within appropriate hold times is part of this position.  This position will also support benthic surveys, sediment surveys, wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species assessments throughout the state. Some environmental compliance work, such as assisting with potable water surveys, oil/water separators (OWS) and above-ground storage tanks (AST) inspections, could also be take place on occasion. In addition, depending on interest and skillset, this position will be able to support data entry and reporting for environmental sampling, remediation, and compliance projects. GIS data entry, mapping, and GPS data collection will also be skillsets that can be promoted.
