Mid-level Environmental Compliance Scientist/Engineer – Orlando or Tampa, FL

Job Brief

Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Mid-level Environmental Compliance Engineer or Scientist to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, ecological and natural resources, and environmental compliance and remediation services. This position can be located out of any of our Florida offices, but preferable Orlando or Tampa offices.

Candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of professional environmental experience preferably with federal agencies such as the Department of Defense. This position requires the candidate to be self-motivated to complete tasks, ability to contribute to a team environment, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

The position will support a wide variety of environmental compliance and project requirements under the following technical areas:  Storage Tank and Assets Compliance, Air Quality and Clean Air Act Compliance, Safe Drinking Water Act Compliance, Clean Water Act Compliance (both Stormwater and Wastewater), Hazardous Waste Management, Lead-Based Paint, Asbestos, Mold Inspection, and Compliance Auditing Support.

Specific responsibilities will include the following:

  • Develop Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans and storm water pollution prevention plans (SWPPP)
  • Underground and aboveground storage tank (UST/AST) assessment, inspection, and testing, permitting, removal/closure, and cleanup
  • Perform air emission inventories, air sampling/monitoring, permitting, and recordkeeping
  • Perform surveys for asbestos, lead paint, mold, and hazardous materials
  • Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments
  • Perform field sampling of soil borings, test pits, groundwater monitoring wells, and drinking water
  • Preparation of technical documents such as proposals, work plans, and reports
  • Site characterization and cleanup under state and Federal regulatory programs, including CERCLA and Brownfields
  • Perform environmental compliance training and site assistance visits throughout several DOD facilities

Minimum Requirements

  • B.S. or B.A. in environmental or civil engineering, geology, or science from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience working in environmental protocols for storage tanks, emergency response, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, air emissions, storm water, asbestos, and lead-based paint
  • Ability to work in the field in various types of weather, and the ability to lift heavy equipment (30 pounds) required, as well as stand, bend, twist, and walk for 8 hours a day
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills
  • Proficiency using Microsoft office suite and Adobe products
  • Must demonstrate an ability in collaborative problem solving with stakeholders, clients, and peers
  • A valid Florida Driver’s license is required, and a clean driving record must be maintained
  • Must be able to pass drug testing and a background check
  • U.S. Citizenship due to Federal contracting requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with federal agencies such as the Department of Defense
  • Storage tank certifications (e.g., SP001 AST Inspector, UST Inspector)
  • Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer (PE) Certification
  • Emergency response and cleanup
  • Indoor air quality sampling/monitoring
  • Confined space training and experience
  • Experience with GIS, CAD, MS WORD, MS Excel, and environmental modeling software applications
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Experience with environmental investigation programs including Phase l/ll Environmental Site Assessments
