Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Senior Scientist/Project Manager with proven experience to support and expand our Water Resources and Compliance Service Lines. This position requires a strong background in applied water resources research, an understanding of Clean Water Act compliance requirements, and solid project management skills.
AEI has three offices located in Florida (Orlando, Melbourne, and Tampa) and is a regional leader in water resources, ecological and natural resources, geospatial, and environmental remediation and compliance services. This position is ideal for someone who prefers a high-energy environmental working on diverse projects ranging from developing comprehensive water quality monitoring programs and lake restoration plans, implementing innovative Best Management Practices, providing regulatory guidance and evaluating the effectiveness of novel approaches to water resources management. The position can work out of any of AEI’s office locations or in the Palm Beach area.
Qualified candidates must have demonstrated experience and expertise in water resource issues relevant to Florida and/or the Southeastern US. Competency is desired in one or more areas including water quality, watershed management planning, lake management, groundwater and surface water modeling, water supply/planning, wastewater, and/or environmental protection policies and programs.
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 10 years of progressive professional experience, with three years as a project manager. This position requires a strong background in water resources applications, solid project management and technical writing skills, and is a great communicator and collaborator.

Responsibilities
- Develops and leads water resources monitoring, planning, and restoration projects, using data analyses techniques, available regulatory guidelines, historical information, and innovative approaches to provide science driven management tools to clients.
- Effectively organizes, writes, and edits technical reports, user guides, peer review summaries, data collection memos, and other technical documents. Writes analytical methods and technical documents so they are understandable to lay readers and accurately represent processes and results.
- Peer reviews technical reports and documentation, ensuring the company’s high-quality standard is met prior to product delivery.
- Coordinates multidisciplinary research teams to design research and field sampling methods to solve real-world environmental problems.
- Manages the scope, schedule, and budget of water resources projects from concept to completion including design, scoping, permitting, installing, collecting and analyzing data collection, and reporting.
- Plans and manages project staffing requirements, reports project performance, and identifies and addresses work outside of the approved scope as well as schedule or quality issues to ensure the successful delivery of final products on time and within budget.
- Presents at public workshops and community forums as needed to gather input on policy recommendations, restoration activities, adaptation planning and other activities.
- Effectively communicates with clients, regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and the public.
- Writes scope documents in response to specific client task requests.
- Assists with business development opportunities and written products, including proposal technical approaches, company capability statements, and project descriptions.
- Successfully delivers projects within the clients’ budget and schedule requirements, while delivering targeted profit to the firm.
- Occasionally travels to client sites for kick-off meetings, project investigations, workshops, charrettes and other project meetings.
- Advocates for performance excellence and high-quality deliverables; working proactively with the technical team to standardize forms and processes to facilitate consistent and accurate outputs.
- Assists with expanding the water resources service line through team building and business development.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Engineering, Water Resources Management, Chemistry, or a related water resources discipline; Master’s degree or higher preferred.
- ≥10 years of water resources management experience.
- ≥3 years of project management experience.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Candidate must have solid technical writing skills and effective inter-communication skills.
- Candidate must be accountable for their productivity and actions.
- A valid Florida Driver’s license is required, and a clean driving record must be maintained.
- Must be able to pass drug testing and a background check.
- Ability to work on DOD contracts (US citizenship required).
Desired Qualifications
- 5+ years of related project management experience is preferred.
- Training or supervisory experience.
- Graduate degree preferred.
- Public sector project experience (state, local, federal government).
- Project management experience specific to Environmental and/or Engineering Services preferred.
- Experience presenting data and final products to technical peers and/or clients.
- Experience in leading technically complex and interdisciplinary projects.
- Project Management Professional certification (PMP).
- Envision Sustainability Profession (ENV SP) or Registered Environmental Manager (REM).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
- Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office products.
- Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
- Understanding of Clean Water Act implementation, and preferentially, Water Quality standards in Florida
