Senior Water Resources Engineer

Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Environmental, Civil, or Coastal Engineer to expand our Water Resources Service Line. This position requires a strong background in water resources and environmental engineering, a PE license, solid project management skills, and experience working with the public sector. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in water resources, ecological and natural resources, geospatial services, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position can be based out of Melbourne, Orlando or Tampa offices.

Qualified candidates must have demonstrated excellence in water resources projects, including feasibility studies, planning, modeling and/or design, with a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience, and two as a project manager. Competency is desired in one or more areas including surface water or stormwater management, water supply planning, wastewater treatment efficiency processes, water quality restoration, watershed management planning, shoreline design, coastal management, resilience, or Low Impact Development/Green Infrastructure design.  

Candidate must have a desire to participate in interdisciplinary research teams, be a natural problem-solver, detail oriented, and able to lead a team to design, implement, monitor and evaluate water resource management and restoration projects. Experience with federal and state contracts is preferred.

  • Manage a variety of projects that may include planning, evaluation, design, and construction of stormwater treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, coastal structures, among others.
  • Technical lead responsible for the execution of work involving conventional and innovative environmental and ecological engineering designs and other related infrastructure projects
  • Supervise field assessments to evaluate and document existing site-specific conditions or collect design criteria or evaluation data
  • Participate in interdisciplinary research teams to conduct environmental studies, permitting, and alternative analyses
  • Train junior staff and supervise those completing engineering calculations, technical drawings and specifications
  • Peer review or primary senior author on technical reports, depending on project complexity
  • Check performance or conformity with design plans and specifications through field inspection and reporting
  • Plan project approach, develop scopes of work, prepare technical work plans and project status reports
  • Review local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance throughout project implementation
  • Ensure the application of approved standard operating practices to field and data management practices
  • Contribute to the development of proposals and scopes of work in response to client task requests
  • Build business relationships with local and federal government clients
  • Assist with expanding the Water Resources service line, including leading and/or peer reviewing responses to RFPs and RFQs, conducting shortlisting presentations, and attending conferences
  • Communicate with various municipality, utility, and government clients, subcontractors, and government regulating agencies
  • Manage the scope, schedule, and budget across multiple projects – from conceptual studies to full design and construction administration to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Plan and manage project staffing requirements and project performance, and identifies and addresses scope creep, schedule, or quality issues to ensure a successful project.
  • Work with clients, customers, and contracting partners to team on project and share work.
  • Write workflows, approaches, and innovation designs in response to specific client task requests and general requests for proposals/qualifications.
  • Occasionally travel to client sites for project investigations, definition workshops, charrettes and project meetings
  • Advocates for design excellence and quality in overall program and all project deliverables; works proactively with federal clients to identify expectations and achieve Very Good to Exceptional CPARS ratings
  • Coordinate, appoint and supervise subcontractors

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • PE License in Florida (or another state and able to obtain a Florida PE 6 months of hire
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Coastal Engineering, or a related water resources discipline; Master’s degree preferred
  • 8 years of progressive experience in water resources engineering
  • Excellent project management skills, with 2 years of minimum experience
  • Knowledge of the regulatory processes in Florida
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office products
  • Solid technical writing skills and effective communication skills
  • Accountable for their productivity and actions
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and good driving record required
  • Due to the nature of the projects (DOD clients), US citizenship is required

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in AutoCAD and Civil 3D preferred, MEP/Revit, and hydraulic modeling platforms
  • Experience with surface water, groundwater, and integrated modeling codes such as HEC-RAS, ICPR (Stormwise), MIKE-SHE, and/or SWMM
  • Experience with Green Infrastructure, Water Quality, or Coastal Resilience projects
  • Federal experience, including DoD experience preferred
  • LEED accreditation or other accepted “Green Rating System” and sustainable project experience
  • Certified Floodplain Manager
