Entry-Level Water Resources Engineer – Melbourne, Orlando, or Tampa, FL

Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic Environmental or Civil Engineer to expand our Water Resources Service Line. This position requires a technical background in water resources engineering as well as the ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in water resources, ecological and natural resources, geospatial services, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position can be based out of Melbourne, Orlando or Tampa offices.

Qualified candidates must have demonstrated excellence in environmental or civil engineering courses and ideally, experience working on the design of water resources projects. Competency is desired in one or more areas including civil engineering, surface water or stormwater management, water supply/planning, water quality restoration, watershed management planning, shoreline designs, coastal management, resilience and climate adaptation, or Low Impact Development/Green Infrastructure design.


Candidate should have a degree in environmental or civil engineering and a desire to work on interdisciplinary research teams to design, implement, monitor and evaluate water resource planning and restoration projects. The ideal candidate is proficient at using AutoCAD for designing.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

  • Work closely with project managers and other team leads to execute work involving conventional and innovative environmental and ecological engineering designs and other related infrastructure projects
  • Support a variety of projects that may include planning, evaluation, design, and construction of wastewater, water resources management, and stormwater treatment systems
  • Perform field assessments to evaluate and document existing site-specific conditions or collect design criteria or evaluation data
  • Assist with environmental studies, permitting, and alternative analyses
  • Perform calculations, prepare technical drawings, specifications, and reports under supervision
  • Check performance or conformity with design plans and specifications through field inspection and reporting
  • Prepare technical work plans and reports
  • Review local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance
  • Apply approved standard operating practices to field and data management practices
  • Calibrate and utilize basic field equipment to collect samples of soil, sediment, groundwater, surface water; prepare samples for shipping, and complete chain-of-custody or similar paperwork

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related water resources discipline; Graduate degree highly preferred 
  • Proficient in AutoCAD 
  • Experience with Civil 3D, MEP/Revit, or other hydraulic modeling platforms  
  • EIT certification preferred  
  • Internship or applied experience preferred. 
  • Must have excellent technical writing and communication skills. 
  • Must be organized with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and be accountable for productivity and actions. 
  • Energetic, detail-oriented team player and leader. 
  • Motivated and eager to learn. 
  • Ability to lift, carry, and load field equipment such as sample coolers up to 40 pounds with assistance. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite including Word, Outlook, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and good driving record required. 
  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship is required. 
  • Able to pass a background check.  
  • Experience with surface water, groundwater, and integrated modeling software 
  • Experience with Green Infrastructure, Water Quality, or Coastal Resilience projects 
  • Experience with database management tools for data tracking and reporting preferred 
  • Experience with GIS editing and data management using ESRI ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online software

  • Ability to work outdoors and walk across uneven terrains such as mud, rock, grass, dirt, and others 
  • Ability to conduct field work including collection of soil, soil vapor, groundwater, surface water, stormwater, and sediment. 
  • Ability to work in adverse seasonal weather conditions 
  • Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), etc.  
  • Ability to safely drive a full-size pickup truck
