GIS Manager – Orlando/Melbourne, FL

Applied Ecology, Inc., a small environmental consulting business with a rapidly expanding footprint, is seeking a highly motivated and energetic GIS Manager with proven experience to join our growing team. AEI has three offices located in Florida and is a regional leader in geospatial services, water resources, ecological and natural resources, and environmental remediation and contamination services. This position is based out of either our Melbourne or Orlando location.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a diversity of project types, ranging from geospatial application development to remote sensing applications, particularly those supporting the environmental and coastal resilience/vulnerability services. 

Candidate should have a minimum of 12 years of progressive experience, including 5 years as a project manager and team leader in the geospatial service line. This is a unique opportunity to shape and grow AEI’s geospatial service line, including developing applied innovative tools to solve environmental problems, pursuing new clients and contracts, and building in-house capabilities. This position is responsible for managing high profile geospatial projects, managing the geospatial team, and assuring project quality assurance. The ideal candidate should have an advanced technical geospatial skillset and proven leadership and project management experience. Preference will be provided to those that can create innovative solutions and have worked in the environmental field and have remote sensing knowledge.

  • Provides leadership to the geospatial services team, including training GIS staff 
  • Acts as an advisor to the team regarding projects, tasks, and operation 
  • Assist with expanding the geospatial and remote sensing service line technical team 
  • Plans and manages project staffing requirements, reports project performance, and identifies and addresses scope creep, schedule, or quality issues to ensure a successful delivery of assigned geospatial projects 
  • Peer review and quality assure project deliverables to ensure AEI’s high-quality requirements are consistently met 
  • Provides recommendations for project personnel, hardware, software, data, budget, and scheduling; reviews and assesses technical work of junior staff involved in GIS related projects or programs 
  • Continue to expand on AEI’s current business relationships with our government clients and teaming partners 
  • Lead the development of technical submittals which include monthly and quarterly reports, geodatabases, web applications, user guides, and other technical submittals 
  • Communicate with various municipality, utility, government clients, and subcontractors 
  • Writes scope documents in response to specific client task requests 
  • Works directly with and manages marketing and proposal team in creating a clear concise proposal 
  • Occasionally travels to client sites for project investigations, definition workshops, and project meetings 
  • Advocates for excellence and quality in overall geospatial services program and all project deliverables; works proactively with federal clients to identify expectations and achieve Very Good to Exceptional CPARS ratings 
  • Applies a practical knowledge of scientific principles and/or engineering methods, remote sensing and geospatial techniques, and historical project data to ensure project requirements are complete 
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned 
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution in Geography, GIS, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or a closely related field 
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience using ESRI suite of GIS software including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro and related extensions and relational databases 
  • Excellent project management skills (≥ 5 years of project management) 
  • Experience in developing scopes of work and proposal responses 
  • Experience as a supervisor of technical staff 
  • Candidate must be able lead GIS projects by developing workflows and assigning tasks to junior to mid-level staff 
  • Experience with spatial data management, spatial analysis technologies, process design and modeling, server and web GIS technologies 
  • Candidate must have solid technical writing skills 
  • Candidate must have effective communication skills 
  • Candidate must be accountable for their productivity and actions  
  • Candidate must be a critical thinker and problem solver 
  • U.S. citizenship (due to federal contract requirements) 
  • GIS Professional Certificate (GISP) or ASPRS certification 
  • Graduate degree in related fields 
  • GIS experience in water resource management, ecological applications, and resilience/vulnerability assessments 
  • Remote Pilot Certificate and UAV experience preferred 
  • Experience in python scripting in the GIS framework 
  • Experience with Enterprise Solutions 
  • AutoCAD Knowledge is a plus 
  • Organized with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects 
  • Possess effective analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Motivated and eager to grow the Geospatial Service Line 
  • Expert level knowledge of the ESRI suite of GIS products, including ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, and ArcGIS Online, Python, Model Builder, and ArcGIS Enterprise. Familiarity with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, procedures, and other mapping solutions or current equivalent 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite  
  • Ability to analyze processes and develop/implement programs and applications 
  • Ability to peer review and quality assure final data products created by the geospatial team 
  • Must be detail-oriented and take pride in delivering high quality work 
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor 
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and as a team player 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent customer service
